The Indian term Umatilla, meaning "water rippling over sand" provided the name both for the county and its major river. The County is bordered by the Columbia River on the north, Morrow County on the west, Union and Wallowa Counties on the east, and Grant County on the south.Fruit, grain, timber, cattle, and sheep are important agricultural products. Recreation and tourism are also contributors to the economy. The annual Pendleton Round-Up rodeo held in Pendleton each year is an important tourist attraction.
