Stephen A. Douglas,U.S. Senator of Illinois, was an advocate for Oregon statehood and the person for whom the county was named. Located in southwestern Oregon, the county reaches from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascade Mountains, It contains the largest stand of old growth timber in the world. About 25 percent of the working force in the county is in the forest industry in one way or another.
