Named for George L Curry the territorial governor, the county is located in the southwest corner of Oregon. The economy is oriented to agriculture and timber. Nearly 90 percent of all the Easter lilies raised in the United States come from here. Sheep and cattle graze through out the county.Recreation can be found in the form of camping, hiking, fishing, golf, windsurfing, and boating. Bird watching is also popular within the county.Rafting and boat tour on the Roque River are a summer treat. The county seat of Gold Beach, was once called Ellensburg, but was renamed in 1891 to Gold Beach to eliminate it from being confused with Ellensburg, Washington.
